A self-led residency that invites a conversation with the land. Material-led research grounded in place, presence, and reciprocity.

My residency in Marrakesh focused on learning the land through direct, attentive engagement. I spent time on the farm observing and collecting materials—soils, minerals, flowers, and fruits—exploring their potential as pigments and asking what new colours might emerge from the place itself. This process was rooted in presence: slowing down, testing, playing, and documenting what already existed rather than importing materials or ideas.
Alongside this material research, I shared time with local makers and craftspeople, learning through conversation, observation, and exchange. Trips to the Atlas Mountains expanded this inquiry, where I collected soils and minerals ranging from deep reds and purples to blues. These were transformed into pigments as a way of mapping and honouring the diversity of the landscape.
One of these pigments was used to paint a mural on the studio walls, conceived as a gesture of reciprocity—leaving something behind for the artists and community who hosted me. I also created clay from the farm’s soil and sculpted a bird bath, offered as a gift to the land and its non-human inhabitants.
This residency deepened my commitment to making work that not only speaks about place, but actively gives back to it—through material choices, shared knowledge, and acts of care that extend beyond concept into lived, tangible relationships.
