At Play and Open Material

A series of clay pieces that illustrates resistance to show emotions I deem vulnerable, being penetrated and unearthed. It expresses a narrative of learning about myself through the clay’s immediacy of responsiveness.

From the somatic manipulation of one’s fingerprints, to the methodical use of carving tools, the clay reflect letting myself surrender to the unknown as I entered my first residency and submerge myself in free creative energy. At Play is an ode to to trusting and exploring the unknown, and a celebration of playing with materials and environments never explored before.

Fostering a space to immerse oneself in a felt experience, clay is that medium that is naturally responsive to human feelings. It’s as if it has the vigorous power to accurately and concretely absorb an individual’s emotions at any given moment. And in doing so, it yields to their deepest feelings, providing no barriers or blockages to the line of expression. At Play beckons all who are tapping into the spiritual realm by connecting with natural elements, found objects and plant-human hybridity to establish a sense of belonging and home.

A collection of works that are a result of surrendering to open experimentation and found materials in Mexico City. These artworks are intended to celebrate the surredndering that is only truly possible through an traveleling and intentionaly removing yourself from the comfortable. They all explore different narratives but which are all connected through the embodiment of collective healing and open experimentation.

Open Material is a memorial to the complex nature of intergenerational patterning, ancestral practices and cultural traditions which may need to be reclaimed by some and rejected by others. It is a tribute to the parts of our lineages that we are trying to redefine and respect at the same time. It is the embodiment of collective healing.
