Painting with Clay

A mural made to honor Zapotec and Nahua weavers who have been mastering the art of weaving in Mexico for more than 2,000 years. exchange for lodging and weaving workshops for a residency space in Tule, Oaxaca.

The mural design is a result of braiding traditional techqniues and open experimentation with my own experience living and working with the artisans. It tells the story of natural dyeing from the plant to the loom, and to the fabrics that sit on our skin. Throughout my time in Oaxaca, I got to experience weaving with a traditional and historical lense.

All the paint used on the mural is organic, it is made of clay and different minerals that are all natural to the Earth. All of the elements communicate belonging, community, connection, balance, collectivism and our ability to nurture and be nurtured. Fluidity is crucial in my design, it is key to the storytelling within my work. Creating connection between each element, cultivating a flow for the overall narrative to form the essense of the region into an art piece.

Story of Weaving, Weaving Our Story is an himage to the traditional tequniques and local materials used in Oaxaca. Rooted in my research and obersvation of everyday life in Latin America.
