It’s a fight, a struggle, a celebration, a dream - a form of protest. My&nbsp; murals portray women of color of all cultures and backgrounds, taking up as much space through their hair, features and movements. The colors are bright, unapologetically bold and in your face. I want&nbsp; to embrace multi-cultural and multi-layered women and show their power, as a form of resistance to the hegemonic and patriarchal systems of oppression that exist in this country and all over the world. I want to represent the individuals who don't fit in a box.&nbsp;Being a women of color, a queer women, a women, an immigrant, a survivor sculpted the creative today, it is the reason for my being and my work. I create for the underrepresented, I create for the minorities, I create for the ones who don't fit in, who are different.A message of togetherness, we need to come together in this very awakening moment in our time to fight against a system that never wanted us to win. We need to focus on what communities should look like being self dependent, we need to choose community over individualism, it's not about working to gain things for ourselves anymore, now is the time to be selfless to care about the people around us that are hurting, to give back and to redistribute love.We are the future. Our voices and dreams are sacred. cycle of love and sharing between bodies in space. The two bodies are represented in similar, but unique positions as they water the Earth and nourish it with their love and strength. This water gives birth to a blooming flower which is abstracted to communicate the strength in coming together to heal and celebrate. The natural elements now are able to also give back to the people and continue this beautiful cycle of love and power. Healing and love are revolutionary acts that have the power to change the world. The design of the flower is inspired by my own background, as it merges North African and South American designs and forms. They expressed they wanted to continue my message of community and togetherness and include plants and foliage from their community garden and home they had grown themselves and with their families. This mural lives within their neighborhood and is a center of play and inspiration. "Feels like looking at the sun, a sun looking at me from my window" one of the youth mentioned to me which warmed my heart deeply. The exhibition explores the ideas of home and community. The exhibition will be on view at Heron Arts until November 20th, 2021. The opening reception for Foundation is on Saturday, October 23rd, 2021, from 7-10 pm and is free and open to the public.Foundation will focus on the concepts of home and community, and their relationship with one another. Is home a place, an idea, a coterie? The exhibition explores how the idea of shelter may take many forms. Shelter is famously included as a foundational basic need in Maslow's hierarchy of needs. I wanted to use the architecture of the space as a storytelling foudation for my work. Each individual panel has a story but also works as a collective and communicate together, which I believe is my manifestation of the world I want to live in.&nbsp; There are not many women of color portrayed in murals around Portland, I wanted this to become a safe space for us but also to feel represented in art we arent used to seeing. This can change lifetime pathways and generational cycles of repeated disparity. This mural is made to feel open, safe, welcoming, informative and a source of hope for anyone that sees it. <img width="5664" height="3776" width_o="5664" height_o="3776" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8486c3ea71539951887bb5bbfa1d6f216039d973e0269a2a7bea6c5441ea16e9/hbuschphoto2022-6171.jpg" data-mid="157995609" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/8486c3ea71539951887bb5bbfa1d6f216039d973e0269a2a7bea6c5441ea16e9/hbuschphoto2022-6171.jpg" /> My proposed design is rooted a vision to create collective mental wellness for all.&nbsp; A mural that reflects the importance of this space where the mind-body connection moves beyond healing trauma but also into full long-term support for individuals in need. “We hypothesize that people with mental illness face 4 major hurdles in obtaining appropriate healthcare, namely the high non monetary cost due to stigma, the high out-of-pocket payment due to insufficient public funds devoted to mental health, the high time costs due to low mental healthcare resource availability, and the low treatment benefit due to slow technology diffusion.” The Journal of Healthcare Organization What keeps us from getting the help we need is shame, lack of information, lack of insurance and financial stability. There are barriers to care for all, especially for those with marginalized identities. All these things prevent us from changing our thinking and improving the quality of our life through healing. A design that says there should be no shame or guilt around mental health issues or mental illness. Art has the ability to open up conversations about these issues a lot of people face everyday and remove the stigma around it. Throughout our lives we learn to find comfort in the trauma, anxiety, pain, loneliness, isolation, and abusive aspects of life. Resource centers are there to show there is hope and help out there. It’s extremely hard to understand what comfort means, what it means to not be on survival mode, what it felt like before anxiety and trauma. What is means to finally ask for help, which is always the hardest step. We should know we deserve to get help and have access to the information we need no matter our financial situation, history, race or lifestyle. This design proposal comes from my own experience as a survivor with PTSD and depression, and also from the experiences of those closest to me. Therapy and support systems profoundly changed my life. I share my story constantly and proudly to hopefully inspire others who deal with similar issues.
